2021 BCS Summer Camp

Combining its multicultural characters and resources, BCS is proud to offer two distinctive summer camps: BCS Chinese Kungfu Camp (June 21 to 25, 2021) and BCS Cultural Enrichment Camp (June 28 to July 2, 2021).

BCS is honored to be in partnership with Shifu Stan Pawlowski, a certified Chinese Kungfu teacher, to offer a Kungfu Camp this summer. Stan believes that traditional Chinese Kungfu is not only a cultural treasure of China, but also an exercise helping children develop confidence, perseverance, respectful attitudes, strong bodies, and kind hearts. Stan will teach participants the history of Chinese Kungfu, standard martial arts stances, and “Five Animals” (Five Forms) of Hung Family Fist Kungfu. The participants will also have a chance to learn a section of a traditional Kungfu form.

In BCS Cultural Enrichment Camp, children will take part in activities such as Chinese chess, performing arts, traditional Chinese dances, Chinese calligraphy art, HIIT workout exercises, and a variety of multicultural games and stories. We are honored and excited to have several talented guest teachers join us at the camp to share their expertise!

Shifu Stan Pawlowski (大侠) has had the privilege to study traditional Chinese Kungfu (传统中国功夫) for almost thirty years. He has been certified as a Master Teacher of Hung Family Fist (洪家拳) and a teacher of Praying Mantis (螳螂拳), Northern Shaolin (北少林拳) and Tai Chi Chuan (太极拳). In addition, Shifu Stan has studied many Chinese Kungfu weapons (兵器).

The love of Kungfu made Shifu Stan to develop an interest and wonder of Chinese culture. With a strong motivation, he and his wife moved to mainland China in 2005 and spent almost ten years there.

Shifu Stan, in partnership with Blacksburg Chinese School, is pleased to offer a one-week introductory Kungfu camp for children. The classes will be split into two age groups. Younger children (around ages 6-9) will be exposed to the history of Chinese Kungfu, standard martial arts stances, and “Five Animals” of Hung Family Fist, a traditional Kungfu. In addition to these, children in the older class (around ages 10-12) will also be taught a section of a traditional Kungfu form. Both classes will be full of exercise, culture, and fun!

BCS Cultural Enrichment camp will feature Joelle Shenk, a current student of BCS non-heritage adult Chinese class. Joelle has traveled across America and overseas spreading her love for performing arts. She will bring and share 15 plus years of experience in theatrical performance and teaching to the camp participants.

Other guest teachers include Essie Jackson, another current student of BCS non-heritage adult Chinese class. As a personal trainer, Essie will lead children to learn and do fun HIIT workout exercises.

BCS Cultural Enrichment camp also offers traditional Chinese activities for children, such as Chinese chess, performing arts, traditional Chinese dances, Chinese calligraphy art, and Go (a board game popular in East Asia). We combine various forms of multicultural games and stories so that children learn Chinese language and culture through play and fun.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!
